**this is the first in a two-part series on having a baby who can crawl, after our first week of mobility. part two will appear tomorrow.**
hands down, the coolest thing about having a baby who moves under her own steam is the chance to get to know her in a new way. before, i could only make guesses about what she liked and didn't like, at least when it came to her toys, based on her reactions to the things i would place in front of her. now, i put her down in the middle of the living room floor and she gets to seek out whatever she wants. watching her make these choices, i feel like i am really getting a better sense of who she is.
of course, to some extent she is indiscriminate. there are times when she moves from ball to book to piano to legos, a whirling dervish with a short attention span. click on the below photo to see details of her first three minutes among her toys the other day.

here are a few of her best-loved toys...
her "box of stuff." this box contains a rotating assortment of small things: her cell phone, her digital camera, her remote control, her keys, small books and blocks and balls. she pulls out one after another, inspecting each before moving on.

her piano. this is the top of an activity table that mems and teed gave bebe for christmas. note how she gets some leverage so she can play really hard.
her first box of legos. our friend tim (nolan and andrew's dad) just recently got a job at lego and since his kids are mostly too old for legos, bebe is reaping the benefits of his position.
most of all, though, bebe loves books. this is not surprising -- both her parents, and most of her grandparents and aunties, are big readers. she definitely has the book-loving genes and they are showing themselves in full force. she almost always heads for her books (or mine!) before anything else, and will sit for 20 to 30 minutes at a time, picking up one book, turning the pages slowly and pointing at the pictures and text before putting it down and picking up another. her current favorite book is CAT, which was a gift from her auntie jude. other popular choices are that's not my dinosaur (from auntie ash), little bunny (from grammy and grampa glen), and on the farm (which was a duckie-themed shower gift from ingrid).
i love watching her look at her books. it makes my heart feel so full.
