the fish is dead. long live the fish.

last wednesday, bebe and i went to the pet store and got a fish for her room. i'd been thinking for a few weeks that it would be fun to have a little pet she could help to feed, and say good morning and good night to. i didn't want anything smelly or time-consuming, so a fish seemed like the right way to go. plus, her room is decorated in an ocean theme so adding a real live fish to the top of the dresser was perfect!

we got a basic set up and bebe chose a fish -- a red betta fish. they don't require much care and they pretty much all look the same, so it would be easy to replace, should anything unfortunate happen (pause, cue ominous music), without necessitating an explanation of death -- or even just why the fishy is swimming down the toilet -- to a 20-month-old.

we named him trousers. bebe loved him. well, she loved saying "hi" to him several times a day. beyond that, she pretty much forgot about him. (i have no idea why josh isn't wearing a shirt in this picture.)

after just a couple days, trousers's behavior became worrisome. he spent most of his time lying listlessly near the top of the water, every so often curling and uncurling one fin. this morning i went into bebe's room and found him dead at the bottom of his bowl.

as luck would have it, bebe and i had planned to go back to the pet store this morning anyways (one in a long string of errands) for more food. so we just picked up a new fish while we were there, along with a bigger bowl. and a net to scoop trousers the first out of the small bowl.

* * *

the following pictures aren't directly related, but they were taken while we were out on our errands today. it was pouring. bebe wore her rain jacket and her "raining boots." while we were in dick's sporting goods, she chose this squishy orange ball to take home. did she know it matched her outfit? probably. not much gets past that kid.

not much except for the big fish switcheroo.

trousers the second. may he live longer than his predecessor.

let me tell you- josh isn't wearing a shirt because josh didn't feel like wearing a shirt. because sometimes a shirt just isn't enough to contain him, and when he reaches into his stack of shirts, they all cower and hide at the back. and that's just the way it is for josh sometimes. dayum.
