what happened, as best as i can remember

8 pm: concerned that she's been sleeping in the moby since 5:30, with no signs of stirring, i cruelly wrest the sleeping bebe from her cozy confines and put her on her changing table to change her diaper and put PJs on. she is, understandably, a bit perturbed. tiny fists flailing, bottom lip quivering with sobs, eyes looking up at me in confusion ("i thought you wanted me to sleep???"), this is probably the moment when she began plotting her revenge. i manage to calm her down enough to nurse her, after which her eyes begin to close, but then make the mistake of asking josh to take her so i can eat some dinner. somehow the transfer goes horribly, horribly wrong and she screams her head off, as if we are stabbing her with dull knives, for the next half hour. we take turns walking her in circles around the apartment.

8:45 pm: i successfully transfer a sleeping baby into her swaddle me in the pack-n-play where she sleeps at night.

9:30 pm: exhausted, since she had been up three times instead of her usual two to eat the night before, i climb into bed myself, relatively confident that i will be able to sleep for several hours before my boobs are needed. she ate at 8, and she pretty reliably sleeps for 5-6 hours after the last feed of the evening... i do the math and figure i'll be hearing from her around 1 or 2.

12 am: i hear the unmistakable sounds of a hungry baby emanating from the pack-n-play next to my side of the bed. i tear myself away from sleep and take her to the glider in her room, nurse her, burp her, put her back to bed. she lies there, awake, and makes lots of noise for about half an hour.

12:45 am: bebe finally falls asleep. i, however, am now thoroughly awake and lie there obsessing over various ongoing concerns. when am i going to make it to the library to do that research i need to do before i give my committee the revised chapter outline for my dissertation which i promised they'd have by the end of september? how are we going to manage a fussy baby at the wedding this weekend? what is that rash on her right cheek? how am i ever going to lose weight when i am HUNGRY ALL THE TIME?

1:30 am: i fall asleep, expecting to hear from beatrix around 3, since she usually goes three hours before needing to eat again after waking up the first time.

2:15 am: bebe starts making noise. what the...? i let her go for a few minutes, confused, because she can't possibly be hungry. but she doesn't quiet down, in fact she starts sounding upset. i pick her up, take her to her room, sit down in the glider, and try to nurse her. it's only at this point that i realize we are dealing with the dreaded "stuffies." the stuffies strike bebe at usually predictable times: first thing in the morning (which for her is around 5 am), and after a very long nap. her tiny nasal passages get congested, she can't breathe (did you know that young babies can only breathe through their noses? i didn't, until i had one of my own), she freaks out, she snorts and gags and chokes. it is so awful to watch. sometimes we are able to calm her down, at which point the stuffies go away on their own, but when that doesn't work i have to squirt saline drops up her nose and then suction them out. which she hates, and i really can't blame her. i quickly resort to this plan of attack, which clears things up. then i realize that we are facing a problem -- if she got the stuffies after only a few hours sleeping, there's a good chance they may return if i put her back down again. shit. i probably should have set up that humidifier i bought last week on the advice of some other moms who have dealt with congestion in new babies.

2:30 am: i go back into our room and wake up josh, because i can't set up the humidifier and hold bebe at the same time. she's relatively calm now, but awake, and i know if i put her down she'll get upset. i ask josh which job he wants, and he says he doesn't care. i hand him the baby -- big mistake. bebe has never seen her father in the middle of the night before (BECAUSE HE DOESN'T HAVE THE BOOBS, THE GODDAMN BOOBS, SO HE GETS TO SLEEP AT NIGHT -- well, usually) and for some reason his arms and voice, usually so comforting, send her into a complete and total meltdown.

2:35 am: in the bathroom, i open up the humidifier i bought at target (it's cute, shaped like a frog), read the instructions, and begin to fill up the water tank.

2:36 am: i discover that the water tank, aka the frog's face, has a hole in it.

2:37 am: i go back into bebe's room, tell josh that the humidifer is broken, ask him what the hell we are going to do now, and take the baby back. we sit down in the glider and she nurses, while i hear josh rummaging around in the other room.

2:45 am: josh comes back in, tells me he covered the hole with duct tape and that the humidifier is working fine now. he goes back to bed. i realize that bebe's diaper is soaked and change it, thoroughly waking her up in the process. we sit back down, i give her a binky, and we rock and rock and rock. and rock and rock. and rock.

3:15 am: bebe is finally asleep, sort of. i put her back in the pack-n-play, where she makes a little noise but quickly grows quiet. i begin obsessing again.

3:45 am: i fall asleep.

4 am: bebe wakes up. are you kidding me? i take her into bed with me, thinking that maybe she'll fall back to sleep. she alternates between being still and silent just long enough for me to fall asleep, and then squirming and kicking and squawking, at which points i stuff the binky back in her mouth and hold it there until she grows quiet and we start the cycle all over again. i am somewhat delirious at this point.

4:45 am: bebe still hasn't fallen back to sleep, and it finally occurs to me to see if she wants to eat. it turns out she is ravenous. i nurse her in bed and then put her back in the pack-n-play. she lies there making noise for about 45 minutes.

5:30 am: bebe and i fall asleep.

6 am: bebe wakes up. crying a little bit (me, i mean, not her), i take her into her room and try to nurse her, but she's not interested. i notice that her diaper is kind of smelly and change her, expecting to find a poop. there's nothing there though -- not, that is, until about 30 seconds after i'm finished putting a clean diaper on. then she poops, looks up at me, grins, and is clearly WIDE AWAKE. i ask her, "are you trying to kill me? do you want me to die of sleep deprivation and then you won't have a mommy and there will be no one to take care of you?" yes, i did, i actually said that. it's a good thing tiny babies can't understand language yet. i bet a lot of them hear things like that from time to time.

6:30 am: it's awful hard to hold a grudge, though. look at this kid!

cute outfit, day two

she somehow managed to make it through yesterday without peeing, pooping, or spitting up on it, so today i put it on her again. hey, it makes me happy.

and we are still loving the moby. doesn't it look like the coziest place to sleep through fussy time? we've got a wedding to go to this weekend that starts at 6 p.m. bebe is just too little to leave with someone else, so the moby may be our saving grace. (not to mention that it nicely disguises my postpartum figure. apparently, the whole "when you breast feed the weight just melts right off" thing isn't true. at least, not if you gain over fifty pounds during your pregnancy...)

couch conversations, clown suits, and carriers

i don't know what they were talking about, but whatever he said, bebe wasn't buying it.

today i put bebe in one of my very favorite outfits for the first time. it was a shower gift (thanks susan k.!) and i have been waiting since the moment i opened it to see my baby wearing it. it is just the cutest thing i've ever seen.

although daddy made bebe cry when he told her it looked like a clown had thrown up on her. mean, mean daddy.

and, last but not least, i think my search for a baby carrier may finally be over. i registered for a peanut shell -- but stupidly didn't realize that my body would be a lot (a lot!!) bigger post-pregnancy, so the one i have is way too small. i bought a second-hand maya wrap -- but it comes with an entire DVD you have to watch to figure out how to use it! and by the time i finally started trying it out, i think i had missed the window in which bebe could easily get acclimated to life in a sling. we've got the baby bjorn (thanks to our neighbors who handed theirs down to us) which josh likes, but it hurts my back. i had been wanting to try out the moby wrap, and when a used one was posted for sale on the jpmoms online group i belong to, i happily shelled out $20 for it.

it's awesome! so comfy for me, and the beebs seems to like it too. she took a nap there this afternoon while i bounced on the exercise ball and watched DVR-ed episodes of 'house.' have i mentioned i'm addicted to that show? and now we may both be addicted to the moby. pretty soon she'll be big enough to face forward, which will be even more fun.

i still want to get a babyhawk mei tai (a custom one in cool fabrics), and then i think my baby carrier collection will be complete.

leg lifts

bebe seems to be worried about the high caloric value of breast milk. unless she's half asleep, she almost always does leg lifts while nursing.

i don't have the heart to tell her her thighs are just getting chubbier...

a quick study

bebe has developed the unfortunate habit of only taking naps either a) in the stroller or car; b) in her swing; or c) in the arms of her mama. this doesn't bode well for days when a) we are not going out; b) she has grown too big for her swing; and/or c) mama has other things she needs to do around the house. so, since daddy is home this week, i decided to work on getting her to sleep in her crib. two other goals: sleeping without the swaddle-me (because we'll have to lose it anyway once she starts rolling over), and falling to sleep on her own, rather than needing to be rocked/bounced/walked to sleep.

so, we started this morning. i nursed her and then put her in her crib, drowsy but awake. she rolled her legs from side to side for a while, checked out her mobile, and then fell asleep.

she only lasted 45 minutes, but that's 45 minutes longer than she's ever slept in her crib unswaddled before. i considered this a great success. a few hours later, we put her down on her gymini to hang out. before long we looked over to see that she had fallen asleep! on her own! unswaddled!

which means that she wins the best baby of the day award again.

and, a couple other photos from the day. snuggling with daddy:

and trying out the bumbo for the first time.

bebe's first trip to the beach (sort of)

we took bebe to hampton, NH, to the beach that her daddy grew up going to. we've spent many weekend days over the past few summers there, sitting for hours in the sun, reading and listening to our ipods and swimming and collecting shells and stones.

we knew this trip would be different. we didn't pack our beach chairs, a big cooler of food, or any reading material. instead, we planned to walk along the beach with beebs in her stroller, stopping at some point to spend just a little time on the sand and, hopefully, dip her toes in the ocean for the first time.

however, we had a real snoozie kabloozie on our hands. and obeying the number one rule of parenting, "never wake a sleeping baby," we decided that photos of bebe's first encounter with the atlantic will have to wait for another day.

bebe discovers her voice

in the past few days, bebe has started making all kinds of new noises. this morning, she worked on her fake cry.

what an actress.

first outing in boston

josh is on vacation this week and we have lots of fun plans. this morning, i told beatrix that we were going to take her into the city for the first time.

she was pretty excited.

we walked down to the train station. thanks for the great sun hat, mems!

waiting for the train.

first time on the T!

before heading over to the esplanade, we hit newbury st. bebe wasn't very impressed.

mommy got her some really cute clothes at oilily for next summer -- 70% off! bebe didn't care.

the esplanade. one of our favorite places in boston to take walks.

it was a beautiful sunny day

and daddy devised a new system for keeping the sun out of bebe's eyes. good one, daddy!

tomorrow: the beach. stay tuned!

(and check daddy's blog for more pics of our day out.)

winner of the best baby of the day award

bebe had a busy day today. she woke up at mems and teed's house, and endured the 2 1/2 hour drive back to boston without a peep of protest. in fact, she slept the whole way home! then, just a few short hours later, mommy and daddy cruelly stuck her back in the torture device also known as the car seat, for the 1 hour drive to providence. once again, bebe marie surprised us with a complete and total lack of complaining. zzz... zzz... zzz...

we drove down to brown for the opening-of-the-academic-year BBQ for mommy's department, and when faced with a lawn full of academics, bebe and her buddy ocean turned to their pacifiers. (if only the partners of department members could so easily and openly comfort themselves -- oh, wait, they all had bottles of beer in hand.)

someone unthinkingly scheduled the BBQ from 4-7 pm. hello, that's bebe's fussy time! how is she supposed to charm mommy's faculty and fellow grad students during the baby witching hour? well, we have no idea how, but she did it. she held it together for almost the entire thing, smiling and cooing and just generally spreading her adorable-ness all around the department of american civilization. everyone who met her was suitably impressed, although we couldn't understand why they all kept commenting on how little she is. she is over two pounds bigger than she was seven weeks ago!

anyway, when we got home, after yet another hour in the car with a cooperative beebs, we told her that the winner of the best baby of the day award would be announced shortly.

she looked a bit worried at first,

and then she tried to distract the judges with funny faces.

it's you, bebe!, we said. you are the best baby of the day! you win!!!

"who, me?"

seven weeks

today, beatrix is seven weeks old! she celebrated this momentous milestone in the arms of various family members.

totally kabloozed* out in the bjorn on daddy,

discussing how it feels to be so big, with mems,

and chilling in the experienced baby-holding arms of teed, where she quickly fell fast asleep.

* "kabloozed" is the newest addition to our vocabulary. when bebe is sound, sound asleep, we call her snoozie kabloozie, because she's sleeping so hard it's like, kablam! kabloozie!

tongue!

better late than never: the video i mentioned several days ago, of bebe who has just discovered her tongue.
