i have a long, day-in-the-life-of-bebe-and-morrie post to get up, but i just set myself a crazy work deadline so it may be a little while before i have time to put it together. in the meantime i wanted to share a few updates. these are not traditional developmental milestones, but they all felt like big deals to me.
*** last weekend, we went to visit mems and teed. my mom and i went tag-saling over the summer and picked up tons of toys for beebs to play with when we're there: trucks, buses, matchbox cars, books, musical instruments, and more. there's a baby doll that bebe loves to play with, and last weekend she named it: emma. she did this all on her own. teed asked her, "who's that?" while she was holding the doll and she responded, "emma." (emma is the name of the dog at kate's parents' house, where we had been the weekend before.) i was really surprised that she had the -- i don't even know what, imagination? consciousness? -- to come up with a name for her baby.
*** a couple evenings ago, after bebe had spent the day with jessie and morrie, i said to her, "oh, i forgot to ask jessie what you ate today." (whoever has the kids for the day is responsible for feeding them, and i like to know what she ate just so i don't repeat a food at dinner.) bebe replied, "applesauce, apple, turkey." i checked with jessie the next morning and sure enough, that's what she had eaten! i couldn't believe she was able to give me an accurate report.
*** she continues to put words together, though still not more than two at a time. "no oatmeal" when she's done with breakfast, "bye daddy" when josh leaves for work, "more ambulance" when she wants to hear another siren, "book jump" when she holds a book and makes it "jump" up and down on her lap.
*** on sunday night, josh put bebe to bed for the first time. i had been the only person to ever put her to bed in her entire 16 months of life (possibly excluding some of those early weeks when she didn't exactly "go to bed," she was rocked until she fell asleep for a couple hours before needing to be nursed again). it was something we'd been planning to do for a while, but i kept backing out at the last minute. it just felt like a huge momentous shift for me, though that might sound silly. but i had plans to babysit on sunday night, and i didn't want to take bebe with me, so there was no backing out. it went great, of course, and we did it again last night so i could go out to dinner with a friend. it's such a sweet time with her and now that we've cleared the hurdle of the first night, i'm so glad that josh gets to experience it. we're going to do it on a regular basis now.
*** updated to add one i forgot when originally posting: she is starting to understand, and sometimes correctly identify, colors. for a while everything was blue (one night she wanted something to eat, so i opened the fridge and said "what do you want?" she pointed to a bag of oranges and said "blue." she knew they were the name of a color but blue was the only one she knew!) but over the past couple days she has also started reliably identifying yellow, and occasionally orange.
*** she continues to be one of the happiest kids i've ever known.
